Hi everyone, new person here. I have a stupid question.
Did she ever make a talkie or did that asshole Cohn totally prevent that from happening? Are there any old radio interviews? Any commercials? Was her voice ever recorded by anyone??
I have to know. I have a big crush, and I must hear her speak.

Re: Hi...
Sun, March 27, 2005 - 8:10 AMyeah she did - they just stink - :P
i think "the canary murder case" was started as a silent film - and then re-edited and some scenes reshot to make it a talkie -
i dont think louise did her own overdubs in it though -
in the documentary "looking for lulu" they have some interview clips with her late in her life (she lived until 1985(? i think))
she had long gray hair - i think she says something about valium being a plot to steal womens orgasms -
she was still beautiful though -

Re: Hi...
Sun, March 27, 2005 - 8:25 AMi dont wanna upset anyone by saying her later movies stink -
but they do
yeah - she was getting screwed by the studios and couldnt get a decent role anywhere -
but i think silents were her thing -
like douglas fairbanks and buster keaton - they had perfected a style of acting that was meant to be silent -
and sound made that style irellevant
fairbanks even said it when he retired from acting
buster keaton continued to make films that got worse and worse and late in his life said the same thing -
like gloria swanson says in sunset boulivard "all this talking and words words words - in my day we didnt need words - we had faces!" -

Sun, March 27, 2005 - 9:28 AMHey, thanks for the help. I don't care if they stank. I'd already read that the two Pabst pictures had the only good roles for her. But at this point I'm so curious about the actress that I'd still like to hear her speak (with her own voice of course). I see that The Show-Off at least is easy to find.
Your site rules, mckenna. It was nice to see Tynan's article, The Girl Who Was Lulu.
Waiting patiently for Lulu in Hollywood.

Re: Hi...
Mon, March 28, 2005 - 10:51 AMI'm not Louise, so I'm not upset by your comment, but would like you to qualify it more...
Most movies from that era would "stink" in our perception because things have evolved so much in film and acting technique since then. Also, no matter what era you live in, the vast majority of films anyway are going to me mediocre fluff since that's what seems to draw at the box offices.
However, countless film scholars agree that the work Louise did with Pabst was really ground-breaking. You really need to watch those films again and read some of the history of how Pabst manipulated Louise's inherent nature and the situations at the time to get fantastic performances from her.
It also can't be denied that LB has a special kind of of photogeny about her. Her look/face/hair has lasted throughout the ages. It is both old and futuristic at the same time.
Its interesting what you mention about Keaton and Fairbanks. I am big fans of them as well, but LB got a lot of flack in her day for having a "boring" and "inappropriate" style of acting that was not suitable for silents. In truth, she was beginning to usher in the more realistic, understated style of acting that we know today--where about ten emotions can be translated in one glance...rather than all the over-exaggerated silly mugging for the camera that was popular in the day.

Re: Hi...
Mon, March 28, 2005 - 3:22 PMLouise was dubbed by another actress in "The Canary Murder Case". She wouldn't return to the US to shoot some extra scenes and do the dubbing, so the studio found another actress for her voice. This other actress's voice was not good. She may or may not have been the body double in the film. You can tell there's a body double because she moves differently than Louise.
