I wanted to say welcome to all the members of Louise Brooks. I already know some of you, but there are others I do not. It's nice to meet you!
Here's an ice-breaking question for everyone: How did you learn of Louise?
I first learned of Louise from a film class. The focus of the class was images of women in cinema. The Brooks-vehicle we screened was "Prix de Beaute". I was transfixed by Louise, particularly by the shots of her at the movie's end. It was a combination of the shots of her, how she was lovingly photographed, and how these shots were edited together. If the rest of the film had shown as much mastery of cinematic technique, the film could have rivaled Pabst's. Instead, I was left with a powerful cinematic moment that left me hungry for more. I moved on to searching for other films Louise was in, and I read the bios, tribute essays and her book.

Re: Welcome!
Mon, November 17, 2003 - 7:18 AMOh, my darling Lulu, my chrome plated flapper, my dark goddess, my scorpio rising, my kisses for you are eternally fixed in silver and nitrate. I was even still in love with you at the end of your life, when you died, as you put it, "surrounded in my bed with books, jam, cheese, and cigarettes." I am not worthy to kiss the cuffs of your rolled stockings, and I like it that way just fine.
I met you in a book of silent film stars when I was merely 14 - an age when you were already worldly, fearless, and decidedly un-virginal. I loved your patent leather hair and your fearless profile and knew that if only we weren't 70 years apart in age we could have had a marvelous time in the Jazz Age, drinking absinthe and avoiding the clap by only loving other girls. I loved that you went to Europe because Hollywood was full of fools, and I love that you juggled lovers and did what you damn well pleased until the 1940's, where you were a part time clerk in a department store (and part time something else, though rumors are shady). And then the world discovered the magnificent brain behind that bob and you became one of the premiere writers about film. Oh, Lulu, Countess
Geschwitz doesn't even know what it's like to ache for you! I could teach her a thing or two about pining away over hopeless infatuation. -

Mon, March 1, 2004 - 3:29 PMHello there- just joined up and wanted to say "hi" and also to ask a question- I am having a hard time finding a poster of the photo of Brooks with the pearls (the photo for this tribe). I have googled and looked all over and everywhere it says its sold out. Any ideas or info? Thanks. -

Re: Welcome!
Tue, March 2, 2004 - 9:39 AMHi!
I checked online to see if the Booksmith in San Francisco is still offering posters. They do carry Louise merchandise other than books, but not posters. Here's their link if you ever need it:
www.booksmith.com/
I would love to buy a poster of the Richee photo some day, but I haven't yet, so I'm not sure who is a good online retailer to buy from, but I did a Google search and there are companies selling the print online.
I hope this helps!

Re: Welcome!
Tue, March 2, 2004 - 9:53 AMThanks. Actually, I have googled and looked for that particular print, and I can not find it in either the US or the UK. While thousands of results come up, many of them link to the same place (allposters.com) and some other ones- all of them say "no longer available" which I find kinda strange. I could always try ebay but I just dont like dealing with the whole price-haggling aspect of it;).
I did though just order the Barry Paris book. I had read his biography of Garbo and was impressed, so I figured I would check out his treatment of Brooks.
I am kinda new to the Lulu phenomena and came to her in a round-about way- through my interest in Garbo. -

Re: Welcome!
Tue, March 2, 2004 - 12:27 PMI second Lulu. That book is fabulous. It's the kind of bio that not only tells you about the subject's life, but also places her in the culture of her times. -

Re: Welcome!
Tue, March 2, 2004 - 6:35 PMThat's good to hear- I am looking forward to getting it and most of the reviews I have read have been very good. I went to every book store here in Cambridge and no one carried it so I had to special order it. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Welcome!
Wed, March 3, 2004 - 9:57 AMYou can also try www.powells.com
They're a fantastic new and used bookstore, and sometimes they have amazingly cheap deals (I bought most of my Vonnegut books there for about 3, 4 bucks each).
You might find something cheaper there.
Here's what they have so far in stock (but sometimes they will get more than one copy of the same book and one price will be much lower, depending on whether or not it's used, etc...)
www.powells.com/search/DTSearch/search
Anyways, just trying to help out. :) -

Wed, March 3, 2004 - 2:08 PMThanks for the links Lulu- I will definitely check them out and keep your eyes open for posters of Brooks for me! I still refuse to believe that all these internet poster/photo sellers are sold out of Louise Brooks prints! -

Do let us know if you enjoy it. I'm sure you will...I think it's one of the best Lulu bio's out there.
Dang...I need to buy another copy. I lent it to someone years ago and never got it back...*wah* -

Re: Welcome!
Fri, March 25, 2005 - 11:12 AMMy introduction was pretty lucky. I'd heard of her growing up - but only as another silver-screen beauty. In my teens I'd heard what a scandal Pandora's Box had been - that it had inspired the film ratings board. That sparked my interest, but I didn't have any luck finding a video in my hometown.
I'd forgotten all about her until I was a TA for a film history class, and suddenly found myself watching Pandora's Box on the big screen from a 32mm print. What struck me almost as quickly as her glowing face was her lack of that mannered acting style so ubiquitous in early film. She looked so natural and graceful among the other actors, she seemed timeless. Like she could have walked right off the screen into the present day and not seemed out of place.
But I read only recently about her keen intelligence and lack of formal training in acting, and I was blown away again by the performance I'd seen. And I learned what a remarkable woman she was, in so many ways. So now I have it bad. -

Re: Welcome!
Mon, March 28, 2005 - 3:26 PMA 32mm print? You were so lucky! That is the best way to see her silents, each gesture magnified in its grace and beauty. . .
Welcome to the tribe! -

Re: Welcome!
Wed, March 30, 2005 - 9:19 AMI only recently heard about darling Louise - I dressed up for Halloween wearing a little black bob wig - and lots of people said I looked like her! (!!!!!!!) :) So I borrowed her movies from a film buff friend and got schooled. Also a documentary on her life. Now I am a huge fan!

Re: Welcome!
Thu, March 31, 2005 - 11:11 AMYes, that was an amazing book. I first found Louise Brooks when I was working at the university library. My job was to put the books back on the shelves that had been returned. There was a huge book of holiday photos and there she was!
