The last time I saw one of my friends, we were thrifting and I spotted a copy of Barry Paris' "Louise Brooks" bio. I picked up the book and began to talk excitedly about it to my friend. He had seen stills of Louise before, but he's never seen any of her films. He bought the book on my recommendation. I told him we'd have to watch some of her movies together, but now I'm wondering if I should tell him not to read the book until he sees her on film and falls under her spell. I'm not sure if it's good for him to intellectualize her before he feels her.

Re: Advice.
Mon, December 8, 2003 - 7:22 AMi don't know, maybe. but there's no real harm in it i think. i saw her stills, then read the book, then finally saw some movies. and since i already loved her when i saw the movies, it was like discovering her all over again to see her moving around. i had even been a little afraid that when i finally saw the movies i would be underwhelmed (as i have been by some silents), but quite the opposite. -

Mon, December 8, 2003 - 7:39 AMI think her intelligence is part of her spell. So I wouldn't worry about him intellectualizing her. She can work her magic in the cerebellum and the gonads simultaneously. -

Mon, December 8, 2003 - 11:36 AMYou're right. Louise is a potent experience. My friend will probably feel the same way as you. . .
Please let me know when you watch your tape!
