an exhibit at the San Francisco Public Library
Main Branch, Fourth Floor, Steve Silver Beach Blanket Babylon Music Center

"Homage to Lulu: 100 Years of Louise Brooks" celebrates the centenary of the silent film star Louise Brooks (1906 - 1985). Now considered an icon of the Jazz Age, Brooks' popularity today rivals that of her more celebrated contemporaries. On display are dozens of vintage objects - including books, magazines, sheet music, postcards, and related ephemera - which tell the story of her life and films.

Highlights include American and French photoplay editions (the movie tie-in editions of the 1920's), an editorial comic strip explaining the scandalous circumstances behind Brooks' affair with Charlie Chaplin, Brooks' inspired novels, a jumbo-size lobby card, and a full-page newspaper advertisement for "Show Girl" - the Brooks-inspired novel which became a hit stage play and the long-running comic strip "Dixie Dugan."

This exhibit - organized by Thomas Gladysz and the San Francisco-based Louise Brooks Society - coincides with many other events taking place around the San Francisco Bay Area and the world.

The New York Times just gave a glowing review to "Lulu," a Louise Brooks-inspired silent stage play which was performed at the New York International Fringe Festival. The play will next be performed at the Victoria Theater in San Francisco starting September 7th. (see www.victoriatheatre.org/)

Jason Zinoman wrote in Saturday's New York Times:

"The Silent Theater Company of Chicago is dedicated to the idea that the theater doesn't need the spoken word, which it proves with panache in its first production, Lulu, an ingeniously staged version of the Louise Brooks 1929 silent film Pandora's Box.

Stylishly directed by Tonika Todorova, this dreamlike play without words is about an insatiable hedonist who leaves death in her tracks. It opens with a wild freak show - peopled by a bearded lady, a dwarf and a man on stilts - dressed and lighted in a noirishly severe black and white, like the cover of a 1920's scandal sheet burst to life. Last to enter is the knockout showgirl Lulu (Kyla Louise Webb), a good-time girl who is clearly bad news.

In the seasoned hands of Ms. Brooks - whose black bob, imitated here, may be the most famous haircut in film history - the role inspired oceans of critical drooling. Kenneth Tynan once wrote that she was "the only star actress I can imagine either being enslaved by or wanting to enslave."

The charismatic Ms. Webb, who wears a blankly innocent expression, letting her jitterbugging body do the seducing, may not bring on such dark thoughts, but her pursuit of unbridled pleasure is so persuasive that you are sure that after the show she will seduce the rest of the cast members and then break all their hearts.

Backed by the moody piano of Isaiah Robinson, this coolly stylized presentation, which could benefit from a few more tech rehearsals, communicates a remarkable amount of plot - in a few crisply designed scenes that slip back and forth between erotic and macabre.

The glamorous Lulu is a reminder of how effective the great silent performers were in their ability to cut directly to the heart of a scene, something Billy the Mime also accomplishes superbly. If you don't have the crutch of language, you need to be able to tell a story with discipline and clarity, and these wordless artists developed a vocabulary every bit as articulate as that of any playwright in the Fringe. They are particularly eloquent with comedy and horror, two areas in which the theater often lags behind film. When was the last play you saw that was really scary or made you explode in belly laughs?

Unlike talking actors, who generally shun the grand gesture as hammy, these silent performers are willing to go for the jugular. They treat their limitation in speech as an opportunity to exploit the rest of their repertory, which may be the reason that their shows seem bolder, faster and meaner than any others I saw this week. Silence, in an odd way, has liberated them."

Hey everyone! The 11th annual San Francisco Silent Film festival will take place July 14-16, 2006 at the historic Castro Theater in San Francisco. They have a great line-up of films and special guests (see www.silentfilm.org for more info). Among the films they will be showing is "Pandora's Box," starring Louise Brooks. Bruce Conner, the celebrated film maker and artist, will introduce the film. Conner grew up in Wichita, Kansas - and has a story to tell about almost taking dancing lessons from the actress. (Any fans of Bruce Conner's work out there?) I will also be introducing the film, and will try to say something intelligent. ("Pandora's Box" will show on Saturday night.)

Louise Brooks’ fans will want to attend this event for a number of reasons. The festival will be screening a brand new 35mm print of "Pandora's Box." If you've never seen it on the big screen, this is a great opportunity to do so. And, as well, there will be a special selection of Brooks-related music played in the theater prior to the screening. I will be programming the music, and can promise some rarities including the theme songs from "Beggars of Life" and "Prix de Beaute." I believe there will also be some sort of informational slide show about Brooks prior to the screening. And that’s not all…. There will also be a very cool Festival t-shirt for sale featuring Louise Brooks. I can’t wait to get one. (For those keeping track, the glossy fliers for the event open up into a mini-poster featuring the actress.) The program for the festival should have some neat stuff inside as well.

If you want to say “hey” (please do), I will generally be positioned at the book table in the lobby throughout the festival. I am sure the table will have some LB stuff for sale – books, buttons, postcards, etc…. I have also heard from Hugh Neely, who directed the excellent documentary “Louise Brooks: Looking for Lulu.” He will be at the festival. The table will have a few of his DVD’s for sale at reasonable prices. (I understand the Louise Brooks documentary sells for big bucks online.) Neely also directed the Clara Bow, Marion Davies and Mary Pickford films – all of which aired on TCM. The Festival is also showing Davies and Pickford films.

"HENRI LANGLOIS, CO-FOUNDER OF THE CINEMATHEQUE FRANÇAISE in Paris in 1936, the world’s first film archive, was an enormously curious and classically rumpled film aficionado who fought film’s disposable status by saving everything. Joined by the equally eccentric Mary Meerson, over the course of 40 years Langlois hid thousands of films from the Nazis and championed the work of once-forgotten stars (Louise Brooks, Gloria Swanson) and American genre directors (Howard Hawks, Nicholas Ray). The man who schooled Godard, Truffaut, Rohmer, and Chabrol (all seen onscreen), helped make Paris the center of film culture. “A moviegoer’s treat and a cinephile’s delight” — Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune

I wanted to say welcome to all the members of Louise Brooks. I already know some of you, but there are others I do not. It's nice to meet you!

Here's an ice-breaking question for everyone: How did you learn of Louise?

I first learned of Louise from a film class. The focus of the class was images of women in cinema. The Brooks-vehicle we screened was "Prix de Beaute". I was transfixed by Louise, particularly by the shots of her at the movie's end. It was a combination of the shots of her, how she was lovingly photographed, and how these shots were edited together. If the rest of the film had shown as much mastery of cinematic technique, the film could have rivaled Pabst's. Instead, I was left with a powerful cinematic moment that left me hungry for more. I moved on to searching for other films Louise was in, and I read the bios, tribute essays and her book.

Hollywood Reporter
Wed Dec 10, 2:34 AM ET

By Chris Gardner

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Neve Campbell is gearing up for a starring turn as the silent-film star-turned-elusive actress Louise Brooks.

The former "Party of Five" star has bought Peter Nickowitz and Bill Oliver's screenplay "Lulu" as an acting vehicle for herself. Campbell has wanted to do a film about Brooks for many years, and is now looking for a director and financier.

The script tells the life story of Brooks, who was born in 1906 in Kansas. She went on to star in more than two dozen films, most notably "Pandora's Box," "A Girl in Every Port" and "Beggars of Life." Known for her strong-willed ways -- and her trendsetting bobbed hair -- Brooks then moved to Germany, where she starred in several German productions.

It was in Europe that she became a recluse, hiding from the public eye until she was rediscovered in her later years after she was given a typewriter that she used to write a series of essays about her life.

The beginning of Campbell's project finds Brooks in her solitude and then traces the story of her life. Brooks died in 1985.

Campbell next stars in Robert Altman's "The Company," which she produced based on her own original idea. Her other upcoming projects include "Blind Horizon," with Val Kilmer, "Churchill: The Hollywood Years," with Christian Slater, and James Toback's "When Will I Be Loved."

I told him we'd have to watch some of her movies together, but now I'm wondering if I should tell him not to read the book until he sees her on film and falls under her spell. I'm not sure if it's good for him to intellectualize her before he feels her.
